2013 Fall Tornadoes

Emergency Response Appeal

An unusual November storm system flattened a wide area of the upper Midwest earlier this week damaging thousands of homes and leaving hundreds of people temporarily homeless. According to meteorologists the storm system included two of the most powerful November tornadoes recorded that far north in more than 100 years.
Washington, a city of 15,000 in central Illinois, was particularly hard-hit when an EF4-tornado damaged or destroyed hundreds of buildings. Although there were 101 tornado warnings in Illinois alone, devastation stretched across 12 states. Power was still out days after the storms.
The damage left behind by the strong storms could total more than $1 billion according to some estimates according to early responders, many of the residents impacted do not have insurance or are vastly uninsured. Due to the widespread area impacted, multiple states and multiple jurisdictions and the magnitude of this disasters, responders are predicting a long recovery and need for considerable attention to spiritual care needs. "The widespread impact of these storms, the loss of life, is heartbreaking," said one faith-based responder.
