About Disaster News Network

Millions of people in North America are traumatized every year by natural disasters and incidents of public violence. Disaster News Network (DNN) and its sister program, the Center for Public Violence Recovery, were founded to help the traumatized transform their fears into hope for their lives and communities.

For nearly 20 years, DNN has illuminated the needs of the vulnerable and traumatized survivors of natural and man-made disasters and the volunteers who work to restore their lives. With a mission to tell the human story of each disaster in a way that ignites public compassion until the needs of the last survivor are met, DNN is a visible, objective, and credible long-term source of information about disaster response.

In addition to providing an online clearinghouse of information about volunteer efforts, appropriate donations and disaster related research, DNN assists local and national disaster response organizations with public information and social media efforts. It also connects the mainstream secular press and faith-based disaster response groups.

DNN staff members have contributed to books on disaster response, written appropriate donation pamphlets, led workshops and produced topical podcasts, and training materials.

It is a program of the Village Life Company, a Maryland nonprofit corporation that is exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC). Contributions to DNN are tax deductible. A copy of the organization's 990 is available upon request and posted at GuideStar.

The Center for Public Violence Recovery was created by Village Life in 2015 after DNN research found there were no comprehensive protocols to guide a Whole Community's response to incidents of public violence. The Center advocates a restorative solution to community trauma beginning at the grassroots level with leadership from local religious and human services organizations.
